In response to a question concerning the validity of a female leading men in a congregational prayer we have decided to reprint an article we wrote on this issue in its entirety. Hopefully, this will shed light on the issue for those who did not read the original article.
Introduction
Imam al-Jurjani mentions that fitnah is “that which clarifies the state of a person, be that good or evil.” [1] It is also defined as “Strife breaking out among various peoples.” [2] In both of these meanings the controversy surrounding the “historic” female-led Friday [Jumu’ah] prayer is a fitnah for many Muslims in this country.
